IRC Update, Sharon E 10-10-21

The Commission is meeting Monday through Thursday this week, and their meetings are intense.  They had an aspirational goal to have draft maps by the end of tomorrow, but they might have to extend that deadline.

See the agendas and links to tune in here.

You will probably receive requests to submit public comments to the Commission tomorrow and/or next week.  Please consider voicing your concerns to the Commission.  The Commission is now inundated with public feedback but repetition seems to be getting through.    Here’s the 24/7 public comment link:  https://irc.az.gov/contact-us

Here’s a brief IRC update:

The Commission is in the process of creating legislative and congressional draft maps.  Map lines are very fluid at this point in the process and there is disagreement about many district lines.  Also, not all groups and/or maps are treated equally or fairly.  The Navajo Nation submitted a legislative map that did NOT get much attention from the Commission, but late in today’s meeting, Republican Commissioner Mehl requested that a legislative map just submitted by the Southern Arizona Leadership Council be given an official version number (LD 6.3) and be considered first thing tomorrow morning.  Here’s the official evolution of legislative maps from the redistricting website:

Also the Arizona Latino Coalition proposed eight legislative districts that might qualify as Voters Rights Act (VRA) districts.  Arizona has seven Latino VRA legislative districts today and one Native American VRA district.   The Latino population has accounted for 60.9% of Arizona’s population increase over the past ten years but the Republic Commissioners want to limit influential Latino districts to seven.

For those of you who can navigate challenging mapping software,  draft or “What If” maps can be viewed in the Redistricting System.   https://maps.azredistricting.gov/redistricting/.   Once you log in, pick ANY of the templates listed (yes, this is part of an unglamorous workaround).  Then click “Open,” “Shared Plans,” then “Draft Maps(Public).”   Each time the Commission approves a new map, it will be added to that list of templates and the Commission will use that as the new base map for changes.

Best,

Sharon  E
