This is an important one. The Arizona Independent Redistricting Committee is in the final stages of determining what our legislative and congressional maps will look like for the next decade.

We expect the five redistricting commissioners that make all these decisions (two democrats, two republicans, one independent) to formally approve a draft map within the next 10 days or so.

This means we are entering the most important phase of the independent redistricting process, and now is the time to get involved.

This Sunday October 24th at noon we are holding an urgent virtual meeting for all Democratic Party PCs, volunteers, and supporters. Those attending will get an update on where we are, discuss what is next in the process, and learn how your voice can protect the independent nature of redistricting.

While many other states still allow politicians to draw their own maps and pick their own voters, two decades ago the people of Arizona decided enough was enough. In November of 2000, our voters approved an amendment to the Arizona Consitution that not only made the redistricting process more fair and independent it also enshrined specific priorities that the Independent Redistricting Commission must meet to achieve fair and equitable maps. Key among those priorities: the maps must honor the U.S. Voting Rights Act, and therefore protect the voting power of communities of color. And they must favor competitive districts, to encourage high participation in our elections and guard against extremism.

The Arizona Democratic Party has always supported Independent Redistricting. On the other hand, Republican Party leaders have not only opposed independent redistricting, they have also taken many steps over the last two decades to undermine both the independent nature of the redistricting process and the constitutional principles of fairness it is built around.

I’ve said it before: unlike the GOP, Arizona Democrats are not afraid of voters, we are not afraid to compete. Our ask of the IRC remains simple: continue to uphold the will of the voters, and follow the Arizona constitution. That is it.

Please join us this Sunday and learn how to use your voice to advocate for fair, competitive maps that will help stem the rise of extremism in our government.

See you Sunday,
